How to Win at Scrabble: Top 10 Tips

1. Learn the Two-Letter Words
There are 107 acceptable two-letter words in Scrabble. Memorizing these is the single fastest way to improve your game. They allow you to play parallel to existing words, maximizing scoring opportunities.

2. Control the Premium Squares
Double and Triple Word Score squares are worth 2x and 3x your entire word score. Triple Word Score (TWS) squares at the board edges are worth fighting for — landing on one with a 7-letter word can score 100+ points instantly.
3. Manage Your Rack Balance
A balanced rack has 3-4 vowels and 3-4 consonants. If you have too many of one type, exchange tiles. Avoid holding onto high-value letters (Q, Z, J, X) unless you have a plan to use them.
4. Save Your S for Bingos
The letter S is incredibly valuable — it can pluralize existing words while forming new 7-letter words. Using an S early for 5 points is often a mistake if it could have been part of a 50-point bingo later.
5. Know the Q Words Without U
Q is the hardest letter to play. Memorize these Q-without-U words: QI, QAT, QIS, QAID, QADI, QUID, QUOD, QOPH, FAQIR, QANAT, SHEQEL, TRANQ.

7. Play Defensively
Sometimes the best move isn't the highest-scoring one. If you open up a Triple Word Score for your opponent, they could score 50+ points on their next turn. Block premium squares when possible.

Prefixes like RE-, UN-, IN-, OUT-, OVER- and suffixes like -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -TION can help you extend existing words and find 7-letter plays.
9. Track Tiles Played
There are 100 tiles in Scrabble. Tracking which tiles have been played tells you what's left in the bag and what your opponent might have on their rack. This is especially important near the end game.
